The colour of a gemstone is determined by its chemical composition and the way it absorbs and reflects light. Some gemstones derive their colour from specific elements present in their structure, such as chromium in rubies (which gives them a red hue) or iron in sapphires (which contributes to their blue colour). Others exhibit colour due to crystal defects or impurities. For example, amethyst gets its purple shade from traces of iron and radiation exposure over time. Some gemstones, such as opals, display iridescence due to the way light interacts with microscopic layers inside the stone, producing a shifting play-of-colour.
A gemstone’s ability to sparkle depends on its cut, refractive index, and internal clarity. When light enters a gemstone, it bends and reflects within the crystal structure. The refractive index (RI) measures how much light is bent—diamonds have a high RI, allowing them to reflect more light and appear highly brilliant. The cut of the gemstone determines how light is dispersed; well-cut stones direct light back to the viewer’s eye, enhancing sparkle. Some gemstones, like opals, display play-of-colour due to microscopic layers that diffract light, while others, like star sapphires, exhibit asterism caused by needle-like inclusions reflecting light in a star pattern.
Some gemstones exhibit optical phenomena such as a star (asterism) or cat’s eye (chatoyancy) effect, caused by light interacting with microscopic inclusions within the stone. Asterism appears as a star-like reflection, often seen in sapphires and rubies, due to needle-like inclusions of rutile reflecting light in a symmetrical pattern. The cat’s eye effect, seen in chrysoberyl and tiger’s eye, creates a single bright band of light across the surface, resembling a cat’s pupil. These effects are best displayed in cabochon-cut gemstones, as the smooth surface allows light to interact with internal structures, producing striking visual patterns.
