Attachment is an intense wanting to have something – a circumstance or even someone – which produces an extreme dissatisfaction with the way things currently are. When we want something different from what we are experiencing right here, right now, this unfulfilled desire causes us to experience discontentment. Worse, it disconnects us from the present moment – and the simple joy it contains.

When there is confusion, you cannot clearly see what is happening to you or to the people around you. Strong emotions and judgements – either good or bad, right or wrong, gain or loss – have created a distorted view of what life is presenting to you. By practising pure understanding, you are required to take out the personal stories and fears created by the mind and strip away the toxic emotions of anger, self-doubt and frustration associated with what has happened. You are then asked to look at what has been happening, simply as what it is. You can then look at the same event but this time with the wise understanding of knowing exactly what happened to you and the people around you.
